Replace image

Use the Replace Layer feature to quickly swap one image for another while preserving the layer styles, color adjustments, effects, and other nondestructive edits.

  1. Select the layer you'd like to replace.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • Control-click the layer you'd like to replace in the Layers sidebar and choose Replace Layer.

    • Choose Format > Replace Layer from the Format menu at the top of your screen.

    • Press Shift ⇧ + Command ⌘ + R on your keyboard.

  3. Choose where you'll be replacing the image from:

    • Photos. Choose a photo from your Photos browser.

    • Files. Choose a photo from anywhere on your Mac, connected cloud services, or external storage drives.

    • Image Playground. Create a fun, original image original images based on a description, suggested concepts, or people from your Photos library.

    • Add to Playground. Use Image Playground to transform your existing image layers into stylized images. Experiment with different concepts and try out image styles like animation, illustration, and sketch.

    • Clipboard. Replace a layer with an image or a selection last copied to your Clipboard.

  4. If you're replacing an image from Finder, in the Scale pop-up menu, choose a scaling option: Original Size, Stretch, Scale to Fill, or Scale to Fit. If you don't choose an option, Scale to Fill will be selected by default.

  5. Choose the replacement image and click Replace Layer.

If the replacement image happens to be larger than the canvas, some of its content may be hidden beyond the edges of the canvas. Select the Arrange tool and zoom out of the image until you see the layer handles, then resize it to fit the canvas. You can also choose Image > Reveal Canvas from the Image menu at the top of your screen.
